Introducing the 2023 #SCMTME cohort!

The tenth annual presentation of learning for my course Technology in Music Education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music will take place this year on the 22nd of November. It will be live streamed from the Sydney Con YouTube channel, but if you are here in Sydney or within travelling distance we do invite you to this free catered event! I will post links once they are available.

As regular blog readers will know, every year I introduce a cohort of students to music technology and how it can be used in music education, both primary and secondary. We also look at 21st century music culture, especially cultures that are rich in the use of technology, such as remix cultures, the maker movement, and of course this year, the whole idea of AI in music education (there will be a separate blog post to come about that one!).

Students then choose to work on any aspect of the course. Sometimes they do very education focused projects. For example, they develop units of work using a particular technology such as a new DAW, a MIDI controller, or an aspect of video technology.

Others do a very music centered project which has nothing or little to do with music education, but it’s just a good chance for them to learn a new technology. For instance, in the past we have had some musicians develop and present electronic performances, or create a video for a song that they have already written, or explore granular synthesis, and so on.

Students negotiate their project with me and can work on their own or in a group. That’s what you’ll see at the presentation of learning – some presentations from the stage as performances, some on tables where you can get hands-on with what they’ve made!

During the course, each student documents what we learn in class and what they are working on in their project. We are now eight weeks into the course, so there should be a few good reflections here. And in another two or three weeks, you will probably start to read about the projects that students are working on. Please support their work by clicking on the links and liking and commenting!
