Those who’ve followed me on other social media will know that last year I formed a group of music education researchers, pre-service educators, and teachers from around the world to respond to a really dreadful draft update to the Music Syllabus for students in years 7 to 10 in NSW. We contacted some of the biggest academics who were cited in the government’s own syllabus Evidence Base, because it was clear to us that so much of the syllabus content contradicted the research it cited! We wrote a detailed report which you can read here. Peter Orenstein even made an infographic to help us share our key findings!

Anyway, you don’t need to read that report now, because instead you can read the second draft. I’m writing this just as I start out writing, because the window for feedback is very short, so you shouldn’t wait to see what I think, but read it yourself instead: https://www.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-08/music-7-10-draft-syllabus-for-hys-august-2023.pdf
And if you want to know what I think – I’m live-Tooting my responses over on Mastodon (because Twitter/X is nasty now and people can’t just have civilised debate there … plus the owner is a narcissitic sociopath and if I needed that in my life, I’d still be on Facebook). https://aus.social/@jameshumbers
