Project-Based Learning for digital sound communication

My wonderful colleague Brad Fuller and I published a paper on the pedagogies we’ve developed in a course I originally wrote on digital sound which has become really popular at the University of Sydney since the pandemic (it’s entirely online). The challenge in this paper was writing for the Media Journal in Music Education for the first time, and for two reasons:

  1. You have to keep all videos under 7 minutes, so even talking quickly, this doesn’t really allow time for traditional research sections like literature reviews and lengthy methodologies. We attempted to synthesise these ideas, especially into our criticism of the university managerial approach around 5 minutes in.
  2. The journal puts a strong emphasis on practice, which again squeezes the time one can give to traditional research approaches. However, the paper is still blind peer-reviewed, so it does need to be “researchy-enough”, and we felt strongly that there’s something really powerful about a video journal for Music Education.
